Most people spend more time choosing a hotel for a week’s holiday than choosing a removal company for an international move. Given what’s at stake – your belongings, your timeline, and a significant amount of money — that’s worth reconsidering.
The removal industry has no universal quality standard. Companies range from highly professional operations with in-house customs teams and their own fleets, to informal arrangements where a single driver subcontracts everything. The gap between them isn’t always obvious from a website or a quote.
Here are seven questions that separate the ones worth trusting from the ones worth avoiding.
1. Do you handle customs clearance in-house or through an external agent?
This is the most important question for any UK–EU move. Post-Brexit, every removal crossing the border requires full customs documentation. Companies that use external agents introduce a coordination gap – if something goes wrong at the border, you’re caught between two parties, each pointing at the other. In-house customs handling means one team owns the whole process.
2. Do you own your fleet or use subcontractors?
When a company uses subcontractors, your belongings may change hands multiple times between collection and delivery. Each handover is a point of risk. Own-fleet operators maintain direct control – and direct accountability.
3. How do you document the condition of belongings before loading?
A written inventory with condition notes is your evidence if anything is damaged in transit. Without it, a claim is your word against theirs. Ask specifically whether they photograph items and whether you receive a copy of the inventory before the van leaves.
4. What happens if there’s a problem at the border?
Ask this directly. A good company will have a clear answer. A vague answer – or a redirect to their terms and conditions – tells you something.
5. Is your quote fixed or an estimate?
‘Estimates’ in the removal industry have a way of becoming higher invoices. A fixed quote based on a proper survey – whether in person or via video call – means no surprises on delivery day.
6. What are your storage arrangements?
Most international moves involve a gap between collection and delivery. Ask whether they use their own facilities or third-party storage, and whether storage is included in the quote or charged separately.

- Can you show me recent reviews from moves on my specific route?
A company that moves households from the UK to Spain every week will have specific knowledge of that corridor – customs requirements, common delays, local delivery conditions. General positive reviews are useful; route-specific experience is more useful.
None of these questions are unfair to ask. A company that handles international removals professionally will have straightforward answers to all of them. One that doesn’t is worth removing from your shortlist.
