The flow of British expats from Spain back to the UK has been consistent since Brexit. Some planned it from the start, returning once the full implications of the 90/180-day rule became clear. Others have been in Spain for years, raising families or running businesses, and are now at a point where returning makes sense.
Whatever the reason, the logistics of moving back to the UK from Spain are more involved than they were before 2021 – and different from how most people assume.
Post-Brexit customs on the Spain-UK route
Moving your household goods from Spain to the UK is a customs event in both directions. On the Spanish side, your goods need to be cleared for export from the EU. On the UK side, they arrive as imports and need UK customs clearance.
For personal belongings being brought back permanently, UK customs allows import free of duty and VAT under Transfer of Residence Relief – the UK equivalent of the EU’s ToR relief. The application goes to HMRC and must be submitted before your goods arrive in the UK. The key requirement: you must be returning to the UK to establish your primary residence, having previously lived abroad for at least 12 months.
HMRC’s C3 form is the standard application for private individuals. The process is straightforward if your circumstances are clear, but it requires documentation: proof you were resident in Spain (NIE certificate, padrón certificate, or rental/property records), a full inventory of the goods being imported, and a statement of your UK address.
What about Spanish formalities?
Leaving Spain permanently involves a few administrative steps that affect your move. If you held a Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión or TIE card (resident card), formally deregistering from the padrón (censo de ciudadanos de la UE residentes en España) may be required to close certain obligations.
This doesn’t affect the removal itself, but if you have a vehicle to bring back, note that UK-registered vehicles in Spain need specific documentation to be exported. DVLA re-registration in the UK requires the vehicle to have a valid UK MOT and road tax within six months.
Planning the move: timing and logistics
Spain to UK is a well-travelled route with regular departures. Door-to-door times are typically 5–10 days depending on whether you’re travelling full load or part load, and where in Spain collection is happening (Barcelona, Madrid, and the Costa Blanca all have different road access patterns for large vehicles).
Summer is peak season – both for the route itself and for people making this decision. If your move date is between June and September, book further in advance than you think you need to. October through March is generally easier for availability and slightly lower in price.
Items that cause problems at the UK border
Certain food items cannot enter the UK from the EU without specific phytosanitary certification – this includes fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, and dairy. These are not items your removal company will accept in the shipment. If you have any plants, clear these separately before the move.
Alcohol and tobacco above personal allowance limits must be declared separately and are subject to UK excise duty. If you’re bringing a wine collection, this is worth discussing with your removal company before the inventory is finalised.
What to do on arrival
Once back in the UK, you’ll need to re-register for NHS services, update your driving licence if it’s now an expired EU-format card, and notify HMRC if you were previously registered as a non-UK taxpayer. If you’re resuming UK employment, your National Insurance number remains valid.
For families with children, most UK school admissions processes prioritise children already on school rolls, so getting in touch with your local authority early is worth the effort – especially if you’re targeting specific schools.
