EU Entry/Exit system begins
The European Union has begun implementing the new Entry/Exit System (EES), which will require all non-EU citizens, including professional drivers, to provide biometric data—such as facial and fingerprint scans—when entering any of the 28 Schengen Area countries.
This digital registration is mandatory only on the first entry after the EES comes into effect. Travellers and transport operators should expect potential delays at border crossings during the initial roll-out phase.
The EES will also automatically monitor travel durations, identifying anyone who exceeds the 90-day stay limit within a 180-day period.
The full implementation of the Entry/Exit System across the EU is expected to be completed by 10 April 2026.
