When you start collecting quotes for an international removal, you will encounter two fundamentally different
services. A dedicated removal is a vehicle allocated exclusively to your move. Groupage, sometimes called
part load, is a vehicle shared with other customers moving in the same direction at around the same time.
Understanding the practical difference between them is the most important decision in planning your move.
What Is a Dedicated Removal?
A dedicated service means the vehicle – whether a 7.5-tonne lorry or a larger articulated truck – carries only
your belongings from collection to delivery. The timeline is fixed: your goods leave on your collection date and
arrive when the journey allows, typically two to five days for mainland European destinations. There are no
other consignments in the vehicle, which means no waiting for other customers and no consolidation stage.
Dedicated services are straightforward for large moves. If your volume approaches or fills the vehicle, the percubic-metre cost is efficient, and the control over dates and timing is hard to replicate with a shared service.
What Is Groupage (Part Load)?
Groupage works by combining multiple customers’ consignments into a single vehicle travelling in the same
direction. Your belongings are collected, taken to a consolidation depot, loaded alongside other consignments,
and transported together. At the destination, they are offloaded and delivered, sometimes via a secondary
distribution vehicle for the final leg.
This model significantly reduces the cost for smaller moves. If you have the equivalent of one or two rooms, a
studio flat, or a student’s belongings, you are not paying for a full vehicle that is mostly empty. The trade-off is
timing: groupage departures run on a schedule, typically weekly or fortnightly on most UK–Europe routes, and
the transit window is wider because the vehicle is loading at multiple collection points.
When Groupage Makes More Sense
Volume is the primary factor. If your move falls below approximately 15 cubic metres – a one-bedroom flat, a
student move, or a partial household – groupage will be significantly cheaper than a dedicated vehicle, often
40 to 60 per cent less. The savings are real and worth the flexibility on dates.
Single items or small collections also suit groupage well. Moving only a sofa, a set of boxes, and a desk rather
than an entire household is exactly what the part-load model is designed for. Some companies offer minimum
volume charges; ask what the floor is before committing.
Timing flexibility helps too. If your moving window is several weeks rather than a specific date, groupage gives
you access to the next available departure at no premium. Peak periods – July and August – see higher
demand on dedicated services, while groupage pricing is more stable.
When a Dedicated Service Makes More Sense
A dedicated service is typically the right choice for larger volumes. From approximately 20 cubic metres, a
dedicated vehicle often becomes cost-competitive with groupage, and above 30 cubic metres it is generally
the more economical option per cubic metre because you are filling the vehicle.
Date precision matters for dedicated. If you have a fixed completion date, a school term start, or a work start
date that the move must align to, a dedicated service gives you control that groupage cannot guarantee. You
set the collection date and the delivery follows the journey directly.
Some items also suit dedicated transport specifically. Fragile or high-value pieces, specialist equipment, or
large collections that require careful loading configuration benefit from a vehicle where the crew loaded
exclusively for your job.
What About Timeline Differences?
Dedicated services are faster. A direct drive from the UK to Germany, France, Belgium, or Spain typically
takes two to four days. Groupage adds time because of the consolidation stage — loading across multiple
collection points — and the distribution leg at the destination. Depending on the route and the schedule,
groupage transit to mainland Europe is typically one to two weeks from collection to delivery.
For most people, a week’s difference is manageable with reasonable planning. For a move where every day’s
delay has a cost — temporary accommodation, a missing item needed for work — the timeline difference
becomes a real factor in the decision.
How to Compare Quotes Accurately
When comparing a groupage quote against a dedicated quote, check what each includes. Packing materials,
customs documentation, and fuel surcharges are sometimes itemised separately and sometimes included. A
groupage quote that looks significantly cheaper than a dedicated one may be excluding items the dedicated
quote covers.
Ask specifically: is customs documentation in-house or through an agent? Is transit insurance included or
optional? What is the delivery window — a specific day, or a range? These answers affect the real cost and
the experience of the move more than the headline figure.
If your removal company uses a third-party customs agent
Communication goes through an additional layer. You may be asked to provide documents directly to the agent. Response times to customs authorities depend on the agent’s availability and workload. This does not make a hold unresolvable — it does make resolution slower. When getting quotes from removal companies, ask directly: is customs handled in-house or through an agent?
A Simple Decision Framework
If your move is below 15 cubic metres and your dates are flexible by two to three weeks, groupage will almost
certainly save you money without meaningful inconvenience. If your volume exceeds 30 cubic metres, a
dedicated service is likely more cost-effective per cubic metre. Between 15 and 30 cubic metres, both can be
competitive — the deciding factors are your date flexibility and how you weight the faster transit of a dedicated
service.

specific move. In some cases we will recommend groupage where a client assumed they needed a dedicated
service — or the reverse.

FAQ
What is the minimum volume for a groupage removal?
This varies by company and route. JCL can advise on the minimum for your specific
destination. Very small volumes – a few boxes – may be better handled by a courier or
freight service rather than a removal company
Is groupage safe for fragile items?
Yes, when handled by an experienced removal company. Items are packed to the same
standards, loaded carefully, and tracked through the consolidation process. The key is
confirming that the company handles packing professionally, not that you are using a
dedicated service.
Can I mix groupage and dedicated — send most things on groupage but a few items by
dedicated?
This is uncommon in practice, and the logistics rarely make it cost-effective. Discuss with your
removal company what the most sensible approach is for your specific situation.
How far in advance should I book groupage?
At least four to six weeks, more for July and August departures. Groupage runs on a schedule
and slots fill. Leaving it to a few weeks before the departure date often means waiting for the
next available space.
